Paralegals were regulated by the Law Society of Upper Canada in 2008. This was done as a way to provide greater access to justice. They found that the average household would have difficulty paying high legal fees for smaller legal matters and would in turn, try to handle it on their own. This caused issues in the courtroom and people were suffering as they were not accessing their full legal remedies. This means that some paralegals are licensed and insured legal professionals, like lawyers, who provide the same legal services but in a different scope of practice.
